Redesigned iPod shuffle
Apple on Wednesday released a surprise redesign of the iPod shuffle. The player now comes only in black and silver colors, and has switched to a tall and even smaller design, completely omitting any surface buttons except for a three-way switch that toggles song shuffling as well as power. Volume and track control are now handled exclusively through an in-line remote on the earbuds, in a manner similar to other earbuds for the iPhone, Nano and Touch.
The most significant new feature is said to be VoiceOver, which reads out artist and track information at the press of a button. The feature can also be used to read out playlist names, enabling people to switch between playlists for the first time on a Shuffle. Apple has lastly narrowed capacity choices down to 4GB, which is nevertheless an upgrade from previous 1 and 2GB options. The new Shuffle is priced at $79.

finest. I wouldn't touch one of these things, but for those that need some simple music player, I guess this is as good as any. I'm sure it's overpriced, but, after all, it does carry an Apple logo.

I suggested they make the iPod speak the time. I'm on a motorbike so it's be handy to know how I am for time. I suppose this is a start...

As a fellow biker, I hope you're not listening to headphones while you ride. As for the time, I suspect the shuffle does not translate the titles in realtime because the voice is different for a mac and pc. I'm guessing the computer does a text to audio translation of all the songs you are syncing, and then hides these audio files somewhere on the device.

I like this design, but now the controls are located on the ear buds.
Questions:
1. How can this new Shuffle be connected to an external speaker? I need to do this often.
2. If the supplied ear buds break, I won't be able to use any other but buy another one from Apple.
3. How durable the ear buds are remains to be tested.

or get lost, or chewed on by the moose, how do you use your nifty Shuffle? Quite possibly the dumbest design decision I've seen Apple make in a long time.
