New devices in OS 3

Following the beta release of the iPhone OS 3.0, an observer has noted that Apple included code for several new product designations, according to the Boy Genius Report. In addition to the iPhone2,1 hardware ID that was noticed in January, the upcoming OS allegedly includes a second model, iPhone 3,1, which could indicate yet another handset in the product pipeline.

There are also two new iPod IDs for unannounced products; iPod2,2 and iPod3,1, while hardware designations iProd0,1 and iFPGA do not fit into any recognizable category of existing devices.

The mystery IDs could simply represent testing equipment, or add further evidence that Apple is working on a new product such as a netbook or tablet. All of the speculation remains unconfirmed, although analysts have already predicted at least one new iPhone model and a 10-inch screen netbook.

    Video Calls

One of the features of iPhone 3.0 is streaming video. This would be a stupid feature if it were only in regard to the camera on the BACK of the iPhone. Obviously we're going to get an iPhone with a front-facing camera at some point. Actually I expect it to come as early as June.

Where did you get the 'streaming video' feature? That's not mentioned anywhere...

And people were expecting a front-facing camera in iPhone 2.0...

    An Touch Toy?

I wonder if one of these mystery devices is a ruggedize iPod touch adapted to be a children's toy. Its touch-and-tilt interface seems amazingly intuitive to kids, even pre-literate preschoolers. If such a thing is in the pipeline, it just might become THE blockbusting toy of next Christmas, particularly if Apple keeps the price down.

Let's see. One acronym, IFPGA, does suggest a name:

I (have) Fun Playing Games A-word

Guessing can be fun if not taken too seriously.
