Wolfenstein 3D for iPhone

Game developer id Software has posted an iPhone port of its classic first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D. The release is an open-source version primarily intended for developers, but which nevertheless remains playable; new features in the game include more hidden treasures, and the ability to try any level out of order. Players assume the role of B.J. Blazkowicz as he first escapes Castle Wolfenstein, and then confronts secret projects of the Nazi Party.

id co-founder John Carmack says he is encouraging other developers to exploit the code for their own purposes. A release of Doom should follow "fairly soon," he adds, and id has plans to announce a "proper" iPhone project in the near future. Carmack also claims that an attempt at porting Wolfenstein RPG failed because while he wanted to exploit the iPhone's hardware renderer, an EA prototype used an inefficient software technique.
