iPhone 3.0 Home screens
End users of the iPhone 3.0 firmware should be able to store more applications on-the-go, testing has discovered. The present iPhone 2.0 software limits users to nine Home screens with 16 custom icons apiece, each of which sits on top of the four persistent icons in the Dock. Intentionally or not, users are limited to having 148 apps active on a given iPhone or iPod touch.
A second beta of the v3.0 firmware is said to expand the number of Home screens to 11, making it possible to store 180 apps. Without extra screens a user is forced to sync apps selectively, leaving some titles sitting unused within iTunes.
Little else has changed in the user interface, except for the Settings menu, which now contains a "Store" subsection without any options listed. Its exact purpose is unknown, but it may be intended to allow or disallow particular downloads from the App Store.

Actually there are. And I'm sure there are a number of them. You can discern this based on no other piece of information but the fact that people knew there was a limit.
And a limit is costly for Apple, because 'unlimited' screen space could give rise to even more purchasing on the AppStore.
Then again, I'd prefer if Apple actually added a hierarchial folder structure to the pages, rather than having to flip between a slew of them trying to find an app.

... I really HATE moving an app from say the 2nd screen to the 11th screen ;-)
I really wish I could keep things 'clean' and be able to categorize things into buttons/folders.
Can't wait till they expand that to 256 home screens in OS 4.0...

one thing i'd really like to see is folders like testudo mentioned. i don't use my sysadmin apps that often... but have more than a screens worth so they tend to be sort of scattered right now. it'd be nice to plop them in a folder somewhere.
but then also a way to organize the screens and groupings on the desktop. like in itunes. that would make it MASSIVELY easier to manage apps.
still leave the current method as well.

Yes, I LOVE having folders( "Categories" ) on my Jailbroken iPhone. I only have 1 screen on my iPhone. The bottom row (above my 5 icon dock) is a set of 4 folders, and each of those folders holds 20 Apps). My setup ROCKS !
