iPhone apps: iKanji touch, PhotoHype, Pi Cubed

  • iKanji touch ($10) is an application for learning Japanese kanji characters through flash cards, tests and a spaced repetition system. It covers over 2000 of the characters that are commonly taught in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and from grades 1-6 in Japanese schools. iKanji touch also includes more than 16,000 example compounds and over 700 stroke animations that can help aid memorization and provide context for kanji usage.

  • PhotoHype ($4) includes several tools for editing photos directly on an iPhone or iPod touch. The application allows users to rotate, flip, crop and straighten photos or enhance photos with various effects such as black & white, sepia, negative, and vignette. There are also tools for modifying exposure saturation, contrast, and color distribution.

  • Pi Cubed ($10) allows users to construct mathematical expressions as they would be written on a piece of paper. The application includes support for a range of mathematical operations including logarithms, trigonometric functions, arbitrary roots, exponents, and factorials. The entered formulas are instantly evaluated and can be stored within the internal database for later reference or editing. Also contained within this database are over 150 equations covering fields such as finance, physics, and chemistry.

  • myFingertips ($4) calculates a users location and then provides them with a readout showing, speed, heading, and altitude. A destination can be entered and myFingertips will then calculate the distance, direction and estimated time of arrival based on current speed. These destinations can also be saved allowing users to quickly get basic directions towards common locations.

  • Birthdays ($1) can help users organize all the birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions they need to remember. The application can automatically scan through the Contacts app to find birthdays and then displays them in a chronological list. Birthdays also provides reminder alerts which show users how many birthdays are coming up within the next 30 days.
