iPhone 3.0 at 10AM ET

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 3.0 firmware later on Wednesday, at approximately 10AM Pacific time, or 1PM Eastern. Deployment through iTunes should be roughly synchronous worldwide, for instance occurring at 6PM in the UK, and later in Asia and the rest of Europe. One notable exception is Singapore, which is officially slated to gain the firmware a day later.

The firmware adds a number of demanded features to the iPhone OS, such as tethering, MMS messaging, turn-by-turn navigation and copy, cut and paste. Movies can now be bought and rented directly from a handheld, and expanded control of third-party accessories has been enabled. JavaScript performance is said to be substantially improved, sometimes tripling the performance of the previous Safari web browser.

The upgrade is free to existing iPhone owners, but costs $10 for those with an iPod touch.

    The Wait

It's ridiculous that Apple couldn't come up with this a month ago.
Secrecy is one thing, but letting all your customers reload and try time after time is simply unnecessary.

    Turn-By-Turn

Pretty sure there's no Turn-By-Turn being added to this update... yes companies like TomTom are developing it for the device, but it's not a part of 3.0.

    WHAT?

@Zink i don't understand the comment you posted (twice). The OP said the 18th in Singapore, you confirmed it, but said they should be aware of time zones? Sounds like they took the dateline into consideration.

@Appleman - Apple said the 17th (the 17th lasts for 24 hours). complain if they haven't made it available in 17 hours (west coast). have you been up all night, clicking since 11:59:59, 6/16? you must be new, Apple's never made anything available at the stroke of midnight. "letting all your customers reload and try time after time"? LOL - go take a nap, it will be there when you get up.

    Stupid schedule

It's ridiculous that the release is being done simultaneously worldwide, in the middle of the day. Hasn't Apple learned anything from the past? It's a virtual guarantee that the Apple servers will be overwhelmed, followed by the ATT servers for reactivation. Fiasco in the making.

It would have been much better to make a "surprise" release at midnight in the US, to spread out the server load. As it stands, all the eager beavers will be slamming the servers at the precise moment of 10:00 am PDT. At least they staggered the release of the new hardware by a couple days...

Apple has a content delivery network - I'm pretty sure there will be many instances of the three updates scattered around strategic points on the interwebs. This wont just be coming off one server. Jo in San Diego is going to be fighting with me in the UK for a position in the download queue.

"Apple's never made anything available at the stroke of midnight."

You're wrong, Apple has made software available at midnight local time. Tiger was released at midnight. All the Apple retail stores closed at 9PM to put out the new boxes/displays and they re-opened at midnight to sell the software. A downloadable item would be much more difficult to arrange at a specific time in different time zones, though.
