App Store turns one

Apple is marking the first anniversary of the iTunes App Store, which launched shortly before the debut of iPhone 2.0 and the iPhone 3G on July 11th 2008. As a promotion the company is highlighting what it calls some of its "favorite" apps, including general-purpose titles like Ocarina, Starmap, Shazam and BeeJiveIM. Some games mentioned include Rolando, Flight Control and Monopoly.

The App Store presently contains over 50,000 titles, and reached its billionth download in April of this year. The service has also drawn considerable complaints however, mainly from developers, who have accused Apple of inconsistent approval policies and a lack of proper site organization. Some have also accused the company of providing too few monetization opportunities, which it has addressed to a certain extent through the addition of in-app purchases in iPhone 3.0.
