Apple Q3 data shows shrinking Mac, iPod revenues

Apple Q3 breakdown

In tandem with a public statement, Apple has published a complete table of its Q3 results, which reveal individual details about Apple's revenues. Among these is an 8 percent drop in Mac revenue year-over-year, led by an 18 percent fall in desktop revenue, but compounded by a 2 percent drop in notebooks. Total Mac revenue was $3.329 billion, as compared to $3.610 billion in Q308.

iPod revenue slipped 11 percent to $1.492 billion, down from $1.678 billion. By contrast iPhone revenue grew 303 percent to $1.689 billion, based on a 626 percent leap in units; the figure is somewhat skewed however, as the iPhone 3G did not launch until July of last year. The latest quarter-to-quarter iPhone revenue growth was only 11 percent.

Breaking products down further, Apple observes that "other music related products and services" (including the iTunes Store) generated $958 million, a 17 percent increase over Q308. Peripherals dropped 22 percent to $341 million, while software and service revenues stepped up 5 percent, to $528 million.

Global retail revenues are noted to have inched up 4 percent, to $1.496 billion. Total revenue for the Americas has risen 11 percent to $3.827 billion, while European figures are up 22 percent, to $2.006 billion. Japan has advanced 14 percent to $416 million.

Mac unit sales are up, but since prices have dropped, revenue is down. This guy finds a problem with that -- amazing!!!

Clearly, these data indicate to me it is time to "...shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders".

Surprise!!!

I'm very surprised Apple's gross margins are so high - with the price cuts on the notebooks I would have expected margins to shrink some. Not that I'm expecting another price cut soon, but it seems to not hurt them.

Also quarterly cash flow was $2.3B, more money to throw on the pile.

Yes, how dare he look at ALL the data and report it. He should just be looking at the data that looks the best.

Basically if Mac sales were down but revenues were up, you'd probably be complaining that they mentioned the sales numbers and not looking at the revenue, which was higher...

Revenue down?

07/22, 12:04pm reply

"Apple posted late on Tuesday quarterly profits that beat forecasts, helped by robust sales of Mac computers and iPhones and higher-than-expected gross margins, sending its shares up more than 4 percent to $158."

"Apple did better than expected in its third quarter results, say analysts from Needham, UBS and Kaufman. Needham's Charlie Wolf notes that revenue and EPS shot past official guidance, reaching figures of $8.3 billion and $1.35 respectively. Mac shipments were up 4.3 percent year-over-year, and iPhone shipments made it to 5.2 million. The iPhone is in fact the current driver of Apple growth, according to Wolf, backed by a distinct software advantage over other smartphones."

Yeah, the news is really grim. LOL.

And how is this different than you or most people here? Oh, that's right, you all also sit and bash the articles, the analysts, MS, Dell, and anyone else you feel you are superior to.

And the sad part is, everything I said about the poster was correct. How is that bashing?
