Epson Artisan AIO printers

Epson on Wednesday announced the upcoming release of the Artisan 710 and 810 all-in-one printers, each sporting integrated an Wi-Fi connection in addition to their Ethernet ports. Either can print on both sides of a page to save paper, while compatible devices can be charged via the printers' front-mounted USB port. Users can also print images wirelessly straight from their iPhones.

The Artisan 810 adds a color fax with an automatic document feeder, while its interface is comprised of a 7.8-inch touch screen along with a 3.5-inch color LCD. The 710 makes do with a more conventional touch button control panel with a 2.5-inch LCD.

Copying and scanning is also performed by the pair of printers, with photos also printable without a connected computer thanks to a built-in memory card reader and the aforementioned USB connection. Photos can be previewed on the LCD screen and edited with an automatic photo correction mode that includes automatic red eye removal and the ability to restore color in old, faded photos. Print and copy speeds are rated at 38 pages per minute whether they are in black and white or color.

Both Artisan all-in-ones are currently available, with the 710 priced at $180, while the 810 costs $300.

    Epson Artisan 810 Serious Problems

I bought this unit only 30 days ago and had more than 5 replacement sent to me by Epson. Each one had a different set of problems, from feeding paper failures, to ADF jams, to lines in printed output. I finally got one that works only to find out that the NEW upgraded drivers for Snow Leopard (OS-X 10.6.x) will cause iPhoto to crash rather than print! In addition, there is no support for faxing from the MAC or any means of selection anything other than the default resolution for printed photos. Apple is aware of the problems in the Epson drivers, but has no fix other than to use the "standard" drivers from the Snow Leopard install DVD. These drivers do not allow you to select any detailed color profiles or print resolution, but they do allow for high quality photo printing and basic scanning. Epson needs to completely overhaul the driver as well as look at the quality control issues in this product. The supplied utilities and advertisements apply only to windows based uses, many of them don't function in the MAC environment.
