Flight Control succces on iPhone

Firemint has announced that its Flight Control game for the iPhone and iPod touch has reached over 1.5 million sales. Released onto the App Store on March 5th, the game has since achieved the top paid app position in 20 different countries including the USA, Germany, UK and Canada. The company has released several free updates with new features such as multiplayer support.

Flight Control is an air traffic control game where players must guide planes and helicopters onto their respective landing strips. It comes with three different airfields and nine aircraft types.

With all the success Firemint has had over the past six months, the developer still has a little while to go before catching up to Gameloft's recent announcement of over 6 million games sold on the App Store. However, both still pale in comparison to overall App Store numbers, which, as of approximately 2 months ago, surpassed 1.5 billion downloads.

Flight Control is regularly priced at $3 but is currently available from the App Store for a limited time price of $1.

A cool Million in six months!

I wonder how it feels for a developer to make a cool million in less than six months. I also wonder if this isn't some sort of a record (selling this many in such short time). Most certainly, it is for a mobile platform. Most likely, it is also for a mobile game (for any mobile platform, including PSP).

Just one more testament about the might of the App Store and the iPhone/iPod platform.

    Respect...

to the Australian developer. Their Real Racing app is also the best of its genre IMHO.

    aha!

Now we know the secret to making a bunch of money. Price an app, then announce you're going to sell it at a 'discount', and try to get a bunch of people to buy it quickly so they can boost sales!

Then again, I recall playing this game on my Classic II some 15+ years ago (I think System 8 broke it).

Don't get me started, i remember a system 6 black and white game i would love to see in a iPhone version. I would have to look for it on my zip-disks but it involves killing peeps with rocks and explosives, very simple but fun.

    Not exactly this game

There were ATC simulation games even for Sinclair ZX Spectrum (A Z80 8-bit processor with 48k of RAM and a RF-modulator for TV connection). Obviously, they weren't as much fun as the one on the iPod (a million and a half buyers kind of validate this).
