Sony Japan has recently introduced wireless headphones that operate on the 2.4GHz frequency and, more importantly, can reproduce 7.1-channel audio. The MDR-DS7100 set has support for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS and DTS-ES surround sound formats. Their range is said to be a long 98 feet, while battery life is also longer than for most simpler wireless headphones at 13 hours. Each earpiece packs a near 2-inch (50mm) driver.

At the same time, Sony has released the DRC-BT30P Bluetooth adapter. It lets users plug in their own headset or headphones and use them without a direct connection to the source device, which needs to support the Bluetooth A2DP profile. The adapter has call answer buttons for cellphones as well as music volume and navigation controls for those devices that support them. The adapter is available in black, white, blue or pink.

While pricing remains open, the MDR-DS7100 headphones should be out in October.
