May represent attempt to clear backlog

An unusually large number of iPhone apps were approved on the weekend of September 18th, one website observes. AppShopper remarks that in monitoring trends at the App Store, it noticed 1,394 titles premiering on the 18th alone, followed by another 928 on the 19th. By the 20th figures had dropped to a relatively normal level, just 298 apps.

The last comparable spike of apps occurred on July 30th, when 947 were pushed through Apple's queue. It is not known why the company would approve so many titles in such a short space of time, but it is believed that Apple may have had "quite" a backlog to handle. The situation could only be exacerbated in coming days, as a number of developers have reported problems uploading to iTunes Connect. All iPhone apps must pass through Connect in order to be evaluated and posted for sale.

AppShopper lastly points out that of the apps which debuted on the 18th, 302 were games. 106 were approved on the 19th, and just 27 were cleared on the 20th.

    what's the total number approved

Did they need to get all those apps approved to get up over 75000, so they could begin running the ad that talks about have 75k apps available?
