iTunes App Store reaches 100,000 titles

Apple marks psychological milestone


Following some anticipation, Apple has announced that there are now over 100,000 titles available at the iTunes App Store. Over two billion downloads have been made, and the store is currently accessible in 77 countries. The total number of apps which have passed through the store is higher; Apple does not count deleted titles.

Though mostly symbolic, the figure does reflect the growing dominance of the App Store. Similar storefronts for Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices have comparatively marginal numbers of titles, reflecting both their recent inception and a lack of attention from developers. Apple's efforts have been in effect since July of 2008, when it introduced both the App Store and the necessary iPhone 2.0 firmware.

    80,000 of them seem to be crappy web-based "RPG" games like MafiaWars etc.

    That's 40,000 of them. 20,000 are farting apps. Another 20,000 are beer drinking apps.

    Nobody needs 100,00 apps

    Which is why the the 5th most popular app is on 51.5% of iPhones while the 1,000th most popular is only on 1.76%.

    That means 99,000 apps are on less than 2% of iPhones. So why is 100,000 apps a big deal?

    Funny how this is the opposite of the mac/windows debate where apple argues more apps isn't necessarily better.

    overwhelming?

    I worry that it's a bit like an army that advances at breakneck speed without letting the supply line behind it keep up. Even with keyword filters, navigating the store is more and more becoming blind fumbling around. I'd love to see a one-sentence description pop up in searches so I am not choosing which apps to look at based only on app names and icon designs. (Or, as a developer, I have a better chance of catching the interest of a customer at that level.)
