Company utilizes H.264 capabilities on iPhone

Livestream has launched its live internet video service, Livestream Procaster, allowing for app-free access to streaming video on the iPhone. The service allows users to stream video content from webcams, video cameras or the desktops of a Mac or PC. The feeds can be accessed from an iPhone and iPod touch, using either 3G or Wi-Fi. The turnkey service uses H.264 HTTP live streaming functionality built into the native QuickTime player included on the iPhone, allowing streams to play in the Safari browser instead of a standalone app.

Livestream is providing a REST API (Representational State Transfer) for developers -- it will allow live streaming integration into other iPhone websites and iPhone apps. The Procaster also includes a free streaming encoder, making it an all-in-one iPhone-streaming software package.

iPhone and iPod touch users access feeds via Livestream's weblink: iphone.livestream.com. The service is ad supported with a premium service that provides higher resolution and widescreen formats, costing $350 per month and higher depending on number of channels and data usage. The Mac software version is currently considered a public beta.
