Also adds lane guidance, text-to-speech
As promised, TomTom has released an updated GPS app for the iPhone. A previously unannounced feature is support for the iPod touch, which normally lacks a GPS receiver. As with the recent Magellan app however, Touch support can only be enabled by docking with a first-party car kit.
Other major changes include lane guidance, a dedicated emergency menu, and the belated addition of text-to-speech for directions. English, French and Spanish are supported, with American, British or Australian accent options in the case of English. Updated maps have been supplied, and the search and route summary screens are said to be improved.
Some users are already complaining however that the update is unstable, in some cases failing to load properly. TomTom is selling new downloads of the app for $100. The company's car kit is a separate product, costing $120.

pay $220 for software+mandatory (but sold separately) car kit for my iPT. OR go out and buy a dedicated GPS unit for about $100 so I can keep my iPod free to do more important tasks (like keep the kids entertained while I dodge traffic). Hmmm.
I'm all for flexing the versatility of the Touch, but TomTom and Magellan seem to be reaching at these price points.
