Trillian for iPhone reaches App Store

updated 03:10 pm EST, Thu November 19, 2009

Launch comes after extended delay

Cerulean has released an iPhone version of Trillian, its normally Windows-based instant messaging client. The app syncs with both web and desktop clients, and supports several different messaging networks, including AIM, ICQ, Google, Jabber, MSN and Yahoo. Users can correspondingly login with multiple accounts, and switch between chats via tabs.

The program also relies on a global status control, and provides push notifications for up to 24 hours past initial delivery of a message. Smaller features include contact cloning across groups, and speed optimizations for slower EDGE connections. Trillian costs $5, and runs on any device using iPhone 3.0 firmware.

The iPhone version has had a troubled history. In mid-October Cerulean noted that it had already been waiting two months for approval, in spite of a flow of e-mails to Apple. It is not known what if anything was responsible for the delay.

Too little, too late

So, after more than a year since App Store started selling first IMs Trillian made it there. Apple approval process is to blame? Rather, it was complete disregard of a new platform by the developer. And now we have another paid IM on iPhone, which I believe will be largely ignored and won't even touch current leaders like Beejive IM.

another useless IM app

Until Apple provides the ability to run apps in the background, instant messaging on the iPhone is mostly useless. Push notifications are one of the worst ideas Apple has had. The Pre got it right on that front.
