Claimed to be first in iPhone tech
fring has released a new version of its self-named iPhone application, v3.0.0.4. The software merges access to multiple instant messaging platforms -- such as AIM, Skype, MSN and Twitter -- in a central location, with push notifications where possible. Contact status is displayed in real-time.
The update introduces support for video calls, whether through Skype or fring's own messaging service. The technology is said to be a first for the iPhone, which has normally been limited to VoIP technology. Video is only an option over Wi-Fi however, and it can only be received, due to the outward-facing aim of the iPhone's camera. By contrast, properly equipped Symbian S60 phones can conduct two-way calls.
fring is a free download for the iPhone and iPod touch. Firmware must be at v3.0 or later in order to conduct voice and video calls.
