iPod-based retail tech to go on sale?

Apple is considering making its new iPod touch-based EasyPay checkout system commercially available, a report claims. The company recently switched to the Touch from older Windows CE technology, pairing it with custom software and a case that doubles as a card reader and barcode scanner. Sources say that Apple has since been approached by a number of parties looking to license the technology, ranging from small businesses up to major retail chains and system integrators.

The standard response has been that EasyPay is a proprietary product, not up for sale. Apple executives may be prepared to offer EasyPay to third parties however, as they are allegedly asking retail business specialists to collect contact information for people making inquiries. The goal is believed to be creating a database of potential customers, though whether or not Apple is just gauging interest remains unknown.

    Retailers currently have options

I have seen over a dozen different vendors of credit card apps for the ipod touch and iphones - below is the app I use.

The app is called "Billing Credit Card Terminal". This app has an amazing interface and also captures the customers signature on the screen using his/her finger in place of a pen. This is one of the apps I think would fall under the no extra hardware needed since all its features and functions are built into the software.

    Easy

Getting in and out of the Apple is so much easier because of the Easy Pay Option. Plus the receipt is emailed to me (which is always nice).

This would be great for making purchases at other stores from Best Buy to Macy's (for small number of purchases).
