Issue affects Classics, Nanos
Apple has finally announced an effort towards fixing problems with iTunes 9 sync, a British website reports. "We are aware of the issue and are investigating," an Apple spokesman is quoted as saying. The company has otherwise had no comment on the matter since early September, when iTunes 9 was released.
The issue has primarily affected iPod classic owners, whose players may eject themselves automatically, or fail to sync or be detected in the first place. In extreme cases, attempting to sync may cause a crash. Similar difficulties are said to be impacting older iPod nanos, which may crash, sync slowly or produce an error message. The fifth-generation Nano, launched alongside iTunes 9, is thought to be immune.

My 5th gen nano isn't immune, at least I'm getting sync problems. I guess I should report it if to Apple nobody else has...

It's affecting even my iPhone 3GS

So this is nowhere near as isolated as they'd have us believe. On my iPhone 3GS, it never sync completely the first time - popping up a dialogue box to tell me the iPhone was disconnected during sync. The next time, and every time there after it works just fine though.

because of the pissing contest?

Maybe there are syncing problems with Apple's own players because they're trying to hard to lock Palm out of the kitchen with a technical approach. Sooner or later you're not going to recognize your own device if the criteria are too tight. They should back off the bolt tightening.
