Apple revises look of App Store pages

updated 09:10 am EST, Mon December 14, 2009

Changes echo iTunes 9 aesthetic

Apple has quietly altered the look of the iTunes App Store over the weekend, changing the appearance of individual app pages. The design brings the pages in line with the rest of the App Store, which was overhauled in September for iTunes 9. Alterations consist in part of a white background, and a new infobar on the left.

The app icon has been made significantly bigger, and screenshots are now displayed in a larger size and all at once, rather than in a slideshow viewer. More controversial may be the handling of descriptions, as only the first two lines have been made visible by default. Expanding a description pushes both screenshots and text reviews further down.

It looks cleaner, but seriously…
What the App Store REALLY needs is an advanced search function!

With the huge catalogue, it's become extremely difficult (and time consuming!) to find quality apps.

Maybe an explanation for users on how to rate apps properly:
5 stars = good
1 star = bad

I think most people understand the concept of how to rate apps. The problem is Apple has a stupid rating system.

If you like an app and use it, you have to manually go to the AppStore and submit a review.

If you don't like an app and go to delete it, you're prompted to enter a rating. By default, if you're deleting it, you probably don't like it for some reason or another, and, as such, you'll most likely give it a bad review.

So, for good reviews, user needs to make an effort to post a review (I don't think you can just 'rate'). For bad ones, users can rate as they're deleting it.

Ergo, even the best apps for most people could end up with 3 stars.

Maybe if they changed to the Amazon style of requiring reviews, they might reflect the quality better.
