iPhone 3.1.3 and 4.0 firmware already in testing?

Two new iterations of iPhone firmware are already in field testing, a website's access logs indicate. Records publicized by Boy Genius Report show devices with v3.1.3 and v4.0 firmware connecting, alongside hardware at or before the present v3.1.2 revision. A v3.1.3 release could be imminent, as it would be a relatively minor update and just in time to support a flood of new iPhone and iPod touch owners.

The iPhone 4.0 firmware is not expected to become available for some time, as Apple normally reserves major updates for the debut of new hardware, preceded by a press announcement months in advance. The next announcement is most likely to occur in the first quarter of 2010, ahead of a fourth-generation iPhone shipping in June or July.

Features remain uncertain, but should include Google's Maps Navigation, which adds turn-by-turn directions to the Maps app on supporting devices.
