Signifies continued acceleration
Over 3 billion downloads have been made from the iTunes App Store, Apple has announced. The figure was achieved in less than 18 months, though Apple does have the advantage of hosting the App Store in 77 countries, and distributing a mix of both paid and free titles. There are over 100,000 apps currently available in total.
The announcement more significantly marks continued acceleration at the App Store, as the 2 billion mark was only hit in late September. An average of more than 10.1 million apps per day would have to have been achieved since then, up considerably from the 6.9 million average tallied between April and July. July saw Apple claim 1.5 billion in total downloads.

I love Jobs' quote in their press release...
"and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon".
They love building up the trash-talking - adds spice to their PR.

I would have thought their advantage was that they were the sole source of apps.
