Facebook 3.1 adds push notifications

updated 06:05 pm EST, Wed January 6, 2010

Also incorporates Address Book sync

Facebook has released v3.1 of its free social networking app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Added in the upgrade are push notifications, which signal new messages, comments, photo tags and the like without having to open the app itself. Notifications can be toggled on or off by category in a device's Settings menu.

Also new is the ability to sync Facebook friends with a handheld's Address Book, keeping contact information consistent. The app is a 1.5MB download from the App Store. Users must be running iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Facebook App for iPhone v3.1...

...is BUGGY. Without permission it changed/synced all of the photos I had posted on my Address Book on my Macbook Pro and iPhone with all of my friends' profile photos from Facebook...some of them aren't even pictures of their faces! While that may be my friend's choice, I should be able to keep the photos I assign. This is a major bug, and Facebook needs to fix that ASAP.

push and contacts

When I first fired the new version up, it asked me if I wanted to turn on push notifications and it also asked me if I wanted to automatically sync friends' photos with Contacts. Maybe you accidentally hit 'yes?'

3.1 Installed But Still Needs Update?

01/07, 12:07am reply

I installed 3.1.1 but both iTunes and the App Store app say that FB still needs to be updated even though it already has. Having an alert badge on the App Store app makes my iPhone battery drain faster so this needs to be fixed. Whoever took over FB for iPhone development fscked up a bit.

The option to turn that syncing of photos on/off is on the Friends panel in the upper right corner "sync". It is also in Facebook preferences under the phone's preferences app. There is a pretty lengthy disclaimer about the sync-ing prior to it being activated.

Considering I paid $2 for the FeX application to do the same thing for me, I'm grateful to Facebook for allowing me to sync this way. It also adds each person's facebook page to the contact as their "homepage" which I'm not sure how I feel about just yet as not being an option as to how much you can sync from the friends' facebook pages to the address book. Being able to automatically update birthdays and phone numbers is a blessing, however.. not sure if that's happening or not yet. (I haven't looked.) FeX did that as well, so it may yet keep a place on my phone.
