Tools fix sound flaws

AlpineSoft has released a Mac version of VinylStudio, an audio transfer utility. The program records material from tapes and LPs, converting the sound into digital files, which are then stored in a local library. Albums can subsequently be copied into iTunes, or else burned to a CD or DVD.

Various tools are used to divide albums into tracks and cut out sound gaps. The app can also filter out noise, as well as clicks and scratch artifacts. In cases of severe damage, a special Patch tool comes into play. The Mac version of VinylStudio costs $30 and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later, running on a 1GHz processor. Each album transferred consumes roughly 500MB of hard drive space; a free trial edition of the software is limited to five albums.
