Classic JRPGs migrate to Apple handhelds

Japan's Square Enix has confirmed iPhone versions of two of its most famous role-playing games. Final Fantasy 1 and 2 are currently said to be under development, albeit with uncertain prices and release dates. The games were originally released for the NES in 1987 and 1988, but have since been brought to several other platforms.

Players primarily explore a 2D overworld, interacting with characters and objects as they progress through a linear storyline. Player stats are gradually improved over time, which helps in the games' quasi-realtime combat sequences. The iPhone versions should feature improved art, as well as new touch commands substituting for gamepad buttons.
