McGraw-Hill, Verizon, more missing from iPad event

updated 04:50 pm EST, Wed January 27, 2010

McGraw-Hill absence a deliberate snub?

Several predicted announcements were missing from today's iPad event, reflection shows. Verizon for instance was not announced as a tablet partner, nor even as a new American iPhone carrier. For the forseeable future, both the iPad and the iPhone will be AT&T exclusives in the US.

The current list of major iBooks publishers omits McGraw-Hill, which is well-known for its educational textbooks, and was previously cited as a major catch for Apple. The reason for McGraw-Hill's absence is unknown, but it could be retaliation for an accidental reveal by the company's CEO on Tuesday night. A simpler explanation may be that deals have not been cemented, such as how the publisher's Connect service might be delivered.

While hands-on testing has shown that the iPad indeed runs iPhone 3.2 firmware, Apple has also mentioned nothing about whether the firmware will soon be available for the iPhone itself, or the iPod touch. iPhone 4.0 appears to be a long-term proposition, though given the history of the OS it is likely to be announced in March, the same timeframe for the iPad launch. At present iPhone 3.2 is missing rumored v4.0 features like multitasking.

The last two gaps in Apple's iPad event were expected iTunes changes, namely web-based library streaming. Apple is believed to be working on a way of streaming tracks from a person's existing music collection, thanks to the acquisition of Lala. The iTunes Store could also soon see cheaper TV episode pricing, or subscriptions, though the Financial Times suggests that deals would never have taken place before the tablet's debut.

It is all about additions down the line. A continuous media blitz. Wait until the VOIP app shows up. Then you can chatter.

Seems like equitable payback in kind for MH CEO's loose lips.

Good partnership

01/27, 05:36pm reply

The continuing exclusive Apple/AT&T arrangement, to me, affirms the factual good business relationship between the companies. Distinctly symbiotic for both.

Further evidence of such is the decent AT&T data plans for the iPad.

I'm thinking the grumblers are relying on vocal volume far more than their actual numbers (as distinct from numbers of conveniently anonymous online posts) to merely appear formidable/credible.

I believe that their ongoing business relationship has been the kingpin in their mutual success so far, so there are absolutely no reasons to change that at, and every reason to continue it.

Yes, because without his big mouth, we would all have been surprised by the announcement.

CDMA? No Way!

01/27, 06:11pm (1 reply) reply

When will people get it? Verizon uses CDMA. No Deal.

Apple is selling more and more devices world wide. Why would they produce a separate device for essentially one provider, with a non-standard system?

AT&T Sucks. I now own a Verizon MiFi card for my iphone which uses AT&T, because AT&T sucks so badly.

iPad also missing from Apple website navigation

01/27, 08:09pm reply

I don't understand why Apple hasn't included iPad in their website navigation?
Regardless of when it's available for sale.
Seems to me the iPad is hardly the revolutionary device that Apple wants to pretend it is - I don't care how thick Jonny Ive pours on his British accent. There was nothing revolutionary announced today in the way of software, interface, or form-factor :(
