Zune HD follows iPod to 64GB half-year later

Microsoft today inadvertently revealed a 64GB version of the Zune HD. While not yet active, the new capacity is listed on Microsoft's own site and is likely to be made official soon. Pricing didn't accompany the leak, but it follows after official price drops and Dell lowering the 32GB version down to $199.

The update supports a very early rumor that Microsoft had planned for a 64GB model from the outset but had held off on releasing it initially for unknown reasons. It's now suspected that Microsoft may have been hesitating due to price.

A larger capacity Zune nonetheless comes half a year after its equivalent iPod touch model and puts Microsoft somewhat behind Apple, albeit at likely a lower price. Microsoft can claim the more unique advantage of its subscription service, however, as the Zune Pass would theoretically allow most users to fill the 64GB Zune HD to capacity with music; it also provides as much as 20 hours of 720p video, which the iPod can't currently play.
