iPad, App Store figures emerge from iPhone event
Today's iPhone 4.0 event has also exposed a number of facts and figures about Apple sales. The company says for instance that it has sold over 450,000 iPads so far, meaning that roughly 150,000 have been bought online and at retail since the 300,000-plus recorded on launch day. The number is well below a recent estimate calling for 530,000 units, though Apple CEO Steve Jobs notes that Best Buy stores are temporarily out of stock.
There are presently more than 3,500 iPad apps on the App Store, which have generated 3.5 million downloads. Some 600,000 books have been downloaded through the iBookstore, but as with apps, Apple has declined to specify how many were free. The company additionally claims that over 4 billion apps of every type have been downloaded from the App Store, from a pool of approximately 185,000 titles.
In terms of iPhone and iPod touch hardware the company cites a combined total of over 85 million units sold to date, broken down into about 50 million iPhones and 35 million Touches. The iPhone is claimed to dwarf rival smartphones in the category American mobile browser usage, with 64 percent of the market. Android phones represent 19 percent of web activity, followed by BlackBerries at 9 percent, and all other platforms at 8.
