Sonos S5 update to tie systems together in stereo

Sonos will soon release a firmware update for its ZonePlayer S5 speaker system that will allow two of them to operate in a stereo system, each designated as a left and right channel. A WhatHiFi report reveals that owners of more than one S5 can select which one is designated as a right channel and which one as a left. This will let users listen to each on their own separately, such as in different rooms, or together from a single source for a more room-filling experience.

The new software will synchronize the two S5s to ensure there are no lag issues, and adjusting the volume on one will also change the volume of the other. Users can control the operation using the Sonos controller or iPod touch/iPhone app. Other changes coming with the 3.2 release software are said to include track-to-track crossfading and an improved alarm.

The update is due for release later this month.
