Sidekick generates web collections, adds mobility
Bare Bones has updated its information organizer, Yojimbo 2.2. The software stores information across numerous filetypes, like PDFs, images, web archives, rich text notes, bookmarks and both passwords and serial numbers. It uses tags, collections and labels for fast organization and also supports search, browse and Spotlight searches. It supports MobileMe for syncing multiple computers to its data. It has a quick input command for note taking and an on-screen drop box tab supporting drag and drop.
Version 2.2 primarily answers the call for an iPhone app by offering web based output capabilities through a new Sidekick feature. Sidekick allows users to export the database or a user-defined portion of the database to a web collection with full HTML capability. The collection can be transported to an iPhone, an iPad, a Windows machine or other mobile device that has web browser capabilities. It allows users to access Yojimbo data in a web collection format. Each exported Yojimbo item becomes a webpage with a searchable index included. The web collection can also be password protected.
Yojimbo cannot export web archives via sidekick -- instead it loads a placeholder page containing the archive's URL. The web collections do not work with Dropbox, due to Dropbox limitations, and Sidekick folders do not support adding files to Yojimbo.
Sidekick was developed to answer a large call for a Yojimbo iPhone app. Bare Bones has ruled out a full-fledged iPhone app due to limitations of screen size and the iPhone OS. An iPad app is a possibility, but no development roadmap is currently in place.
Version 2.2 requires Mac OS X 10.5.7, with either 10.5.8 or 10.6.3 preferred. Yojimbo is $40 for a single user license, $70 for a five-user family pack and $30 for an educational license.
