Mac developers sidelined

As a part of ongoing WWDC proceedings, Apple has handed out the 2010 Apple Design Awards. The candidates were selected mainly on the basis of nominations from developers, although Apple reserved the right to pick its own choices. Winners were rated on a combination of design, innovation, performance and technology adoption.

The 10 victors are split between iPad and iPhone/iPod titles. The former include Brushes, Pinball HD, Flight Control HD, Star Walk for iPad and Financial Times iPad Edition. Winning iPhone/iPod apps include Doodle Jump, TabToolkit, Articles, Real Racing and 20 Minute Meals - Jamie Oliver.

Apple has drawn controversy this year for completing omitting Mac software from the competition. CEO Steve Jobs recently defended the decision by saying that the company wanted to emphasize the iPhone OS (now the iOS), and that there is "no hidden meaning" involved. Some developers have worried that Apple may be gradually moving away from the Mac, given overtaking profits generated by the iPhone.

    Maybe multiple events?

Well, timing is everything, they say. With the recent releases of iPad and iPhone, I'm not surprised Apple focused so much on their "mobile" platform at WWDC to keep the momentum going.

I'm wondering if they'll have a more elaborate event at the end of the summer with new Macs and iPods combined for that back-to-school, holiday season. And the fact that I didn't hear a peep at WWDC about OS X 10.7 or even rumours as to what cat it may be named after, might add to that theory. I mean you're fooling yourself, if you think that work isn't being done on this side of Apple's back yard.

Ohh, and January will bring a new iPad to herd all those hesitant, shy, burned-me-once buyers.

We'll see. If I'm right, I'm starting a Psychic Hotline.
