Brings iPhone, iPod support, PDF files

Following shortly after the launch of iOS 4, Apple has, as promised, released iBooks 1.1. The e-reader has been made universal, compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch as well as the iPad. The previous two devices must be running iOS 4; language options include English, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

All three handhelds can now load documents in the form of PDF files, which are stored on a separate bookshelf in the app. Some other features include bookmarks and notes, which sync wirelessly with other Apple handhelds, and fixes to stability and performance. When reading people have been given the choice of white or sepia pages, and several new font customization options. Text can be made even larger, and justified either fully or to the left-hand side of a page. One new font has been added, Georgia.

iBooks is a free download from the App Store.

So do notes and highlights made to PDF files carry over with the PDF file if, say, you want to open it on a Mac or email it to another person?
