New iTunes Store terms allow opt-outs for iAd data

Requires separate opt-outs for each device

Concurrent with the launch of iOS 4, Apple has altered the terms for the iTunes Store. A summary of changes simply mentions "material" differences in the privacy section; in detail these involve Apple's iAd network, which launches on July 1st. App users can now choose to opt out of background data collection by visiting oo.apple.com.

The site must be loaded on each iOS 4 device a person wants excluded from collection, however, and Apple warns that opting out does not eliminate ads, it simply blocks the "cookies and other technologies" used to track and personalize iAd campaigns. This should however solve some privacy concerns, since the advertising data could be sensitive, and in combination with other figures it could theoretically be used to identify individuals. The opt-out does not have any effect on ads from other advertising networks.

    Good...

Good on Apple for providing this ability.

    Site not working

From my newly upgraded 3GS I continually get "Unsuccessful Opt Out". I guess things are not working just yet. I will try again.

    Hmm...

Good idea (keeps choice in users' hands) . . . actually, though, iAds look intriguingly fun; waiting to see how this bodes for Apple.

    no

The only true choice will come when Apple approves ad-blocking software in the app store, or lets us opt out of ads altogether.

At the very least, any app that serves ads should say so clearly in its description in the App Store.

    Re: no

Sorry, but ad-blocking within ads won't be allowed. If you download an app that uses iAd (or any other ad provider), you're making an agreement to use the app and being fed ads. If you don't want ads, don't get apps that include them.
