Altec Octiv Mini uses iPhone, iPod for time

Altec Lansing got into the game of speaker dock and app combos on Tuesday with the advent of the Octiv Mini. Beyond its one-off slanted design, the single-piece system is built to give iPhone and iPod touch owners an alarm clock through Alarm Rock, a free (App Store) app that can both sleep and wake to the Apple device's existing music library. Both these and non-touch iPods can play regular audio as well as charge up.

The Octiv Mini doesn't have full specs but is likely to have an aux-in jack for regular 3.5mm line sources. By keeping the alarm clock functions to software, Altec Lansing keeps the official price down to just $60; its own site currently lists the system as costing $50. Shipments start in July.
