iOS 4 users report problems with contacts, cellular data

Contact issues linked to Google Sync downtime

Some serious issues have been affecting a portion of people upgrading devices to iOS 4, according to Apple's support forums. Perhaps the most vital involves cellular data, which some iPhone owners have reported as simply not working, whether on 3G or EDGE. The issue may be tied to carrier updates for iOS 4, but in any case some users are reporting that it may be necessary to reset settings, or even restore a device to a fresh state as opposed to a backup.

Some other iOS 4 users have been claiming that their contacts have completely disappeared. The problem may be comparatively simple to resolve, as it is believed to be linked to sync services in most cases. Google explains that Google Sync experienced "unplanned maintenance" on Monday afternoon, affecting the ability to link with mobile devices. Users say it may be possible to return contacts by simply leaving the Contacts app open for a while, or turning sync off and on again.

Several other potential glitches are said to to include push notifications or MMS no longer functioning, and auto-lock defaulting to one minute without the option of changing the timing. Some photos synced from iPhoto may turn out blurry. In extreme cases the iOS 4 update may fail, and cause a device to reboot continuously.

    more iOS 4 problems with 3GS 32GB

first it crashed during upgrade, when restored didn't contain any non apple apps, no music. took some time to to sync 23GB of content...
when restored couldn't enter PIN code phone simply ignored it. after several restarts somehow it worked.
    bugs for now:
    - alarm is late 1 hour! missed work today ;-) (tried several times, still the same). for two of my friends alarm didn't work at all (3GS and 3G).
    - gmail IMAP with unified inbox doesn't show my own messages in the google groups threads.

    overall feels like early beta...

    Doesn't sound right

How do you have 23GB of data and no non Apple apps and no music? Is it all video and photos? Your comment has left me puzzled at how you can use so much data but claim to pretty much have a blank phone?

Small hiccup, but otherwise running good...

Upgraded an iPhone 3G and an iPod touch 2G to iOS 4 last night. The iPod updated without issue, but the iPhone 3G required a manual reboot after the upgrade. After the iPhone 3G upgrade, I disconnected, visited the "Settings" section, and it hung -- holding down the magic buttons and waiting through a lengthy phone reboot solved the problem.

Seems that page transitions are smoother. Web browsing is slightly more responsive. Whether this is, a) perceived, b) due to a restore process (which some say helps with sluggishness), or c) due to "faster code" and/or optimizations in iOS 4 vs. iPhone OS 3, I can't say.

Jury's still out on folder-groupings of apps -- although this is an issue with my own organizational requirements and not so much with the actual implementation of folders themselves. It works great -- I'll say that much -- but it's a paradigm shift that will take some getting used to.

Unified inbox is good. Saves MUCH page switching to hop from reading unread messages in one account to the next.

Text and MMS messages work fine, both inbound and outbound. Phone features and calls work fine. Still, I am located smack in the middle of the city where AT&T's headquarters used to be (San Antonio), and AT&T's 3G coverage in this city is phenomenal (3Mbit down in optimal conditions, close to 768k up).

Can't comment on "multitasking," as neither of my devices support that iOS 4 feature. Can't comment on the icon wallpaper, either, as neither support that as well.

Overall, a good upgrade -- no major drawbacks, no issues that others have reported. Makes my phone feel a tad big "newer." Not gonna hold me back from trying my hardest to procure an iPhone 4, but it is enough of an upgrade to satiate my technology addiction for a while.

No problems here on 32GB 3G

My backup before the upgrade took less than 10 seconds. The upgrade process completed in under 10 minutes.

My google calendar upgraded automatically from a separate CAL DAV account into a setting turned on under my GMAIL account.

    Here is what I did:
    1. I synced in the morning and then went to work.
    2. After work, I downloaded the update and installed it right away.

Waiting until the evening meant that I did not have any upgrade woes with Gmail calendars. Impatience leads to pain.

    iPod App crashes

For me I upgraded to iOS4, then downloaded a song from the iTunes store on the app and then the iPod app kept crashing after 1-2 seconds of being open. I had to restore my back up and then the new song I had downloaded showed up 5 times under neath the album title.

    WTF?

    iAds opt out not working

Posting on MacOSHints and my own experience describe another problem: the opt-out from iAds preference tracking isn't working. Users of 3G iPhones and 2G touches are being told that their iOS4 upgraded device can't opt out because it is "not running iOS4."

    Weird issues

Had some weird graphical issues after the update - the "enter passcode" screen was showing, but so was the progress bar which you get during the update, and it was only at about 2/3rds complete. It was flickering like mad between the two.

I left it for 10 minutes and came back but the progress bar hadn't moved, so I turned it off and back on again. The only which appeared to be wrong after that was all my contacts had gone missing. I synched again with the option to "replace all contact data on the device for the next sync only" and everything seems OK again now.

Battery life seems marginally better on my 3GS now too.

    Got $25 credit frm ATT

Spent all day with iPhone 3G in infinite loop on upgrade.
Still not restoring properly- trying to do a sync to my "new iPhone" for lack of any better solution.
Would NOT recommend upgrading at this point.
Not worth the headaches. Support forums are full of people with similar problems.
Call ATT and ask for credit- they'll also turn you over to an apple person quicker.
