Hardware/software combo a good fit for iPhone

MacNN has reviewed a new hardware/iPhone app combination for guitar players, AmpliTube iRig. Users can configure a mobile guitar amp with sound effects software hosted on an iPhone. The hardware is an interface adapter for connecting a 1/4-inch plug instrument with the iPhone's audio port, and outputting to an 1/8-inch stereo feed. The adapter is said to be very rugged, fit for life in a guitar bag.

The iPhone app is described as producing good sound quality, and offering numerous tone design options. It includes 11 stompbox effects, 5 amp models, 5 cabinet models and 2 microphone simulations, all of which can be combined in different ways. It can also store up to 32 presets, though numeric naming may be confusing with large collections of presets. At the same time, a strength of the app is thought to be its clean settings.

The software works with the iPhone and iPod touch, and is free in basic form on the iTunes App Store. A $3 version adds extra effects, with more available a-la-carte. The tested edition offers full features for $20. The iRig hardware is $40.

how on earth is this a review?

this is ridiculous. it's a 3 paragraph press release. reviews have things like... oh, i don't know... FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE with the product?!

"The adapter *is said to be* very rugged..."
"The iPhone app *is described as* producing good sound quality"

the author should KNOW this because he or she actually USED the %#$^@& product!

    Where is the review???

Poor form. If I was the developer of this app I would not want to pay you for this review. It tells me a potential buyer nothing about the quality of the sounds. it even make the adaptor sound flaky by stating only "The adapter *is said to be* very rugged...". A reader might think this implies ... but unfortunately we did not find it to be very rugged at all. Please get hands on for a product review. There sort of infomercials are a time waister. At lease infomercials have an excited presenter. This writer seems to write as if he is being tortured to do so.

    Yep

I've gotta agree with the folks above.

I'm really interested in picking up either:
    - AmpliTube and iRig
    - AmpKit and the Peavey AmpKit LiNK

I was hoping this review would give me a bit more info to help make a decision. I like Agile's other apps (Tab Toolkit & Guitar Toolkit), but Amplitube and Peavey are pretty well-respected, too.

I'd love to see a head-to-head comparison when both are released. But a real hands-on review of one would be better than just a teaser like this.

BTW - not affiliated with macnn in any way- just trying to be helpful - I take no credit for the poor writing ;)
