OSU will track 125 iPad-enabled students
Oklahoma State University will launch an iPad initiative for the Fall 2010 semester. According to Macsimumnews, the University's School of Media and Strategic Communication and Spears School of Business will provide approximately 125 students across five courses with Apple's iPad. The device will be used both for academic purposes and for exploring innovative uses specific to each school’s industry needs. Both apps and web tools will be used on the device in the classroom setting.
Cost savings for students are being researched in the study as well. One example has students saving $100 on a single textbook in one course -- instead of a physical textbook, the iPad can be utilized to carry a downloadable ePub version, saving production and paper costs, not to mention weight savings for the students' book bags.
OSU expects to collectively discover more possibilities and to stretch the limits of usage by putting the device in the hands of numerous students. Each class will research measurable results on how the iPad integrates and enhances students' educational opportunities and tactical job-force abilities as well as how it can be utilized for further innovation.
OSU is also looking at the development of mobile apps to integrate current university publications to save production costs and improve distribution. The university already utilizes iTunes U and YouTube for educational opportunities. The research will consider if the iPad can be the next major tool in the educational process.

Sorry, guys. But production and paper costs do not equate to $100 for a textbook. Most of the cost of textbooks is from the writing/editing/proofing/reviewing areas.
