QNAP QMobile App allows NAS streaming

QNAP, best known for its NAS servers on Tuesday released an app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad that, along with a new firmware update for its servers, lets users stream multimedia files between the devices. The QMobile app (free, App Store) is compatible with QNAP Turbo NAS servers that are running the latest 3.3 update to its NAS management utility update. The combination eliminates the need to sync files physically and users can access them either using Wi-Fi or their 3G data connections.

QMobile's My Jukebox feature, lets users remotely play tracks based on artist, title, album or other criteria in the ID3 tags. Multimedia Station 2.0, part of the 3.3 firmware, lets users place files into a My Favorites folder, which then syncs the files with the compatible Apple devices for offline access.

The 3.3 software otherwise lets Mac users connect Mac HFS+ formatted external drives to a QNAP NAS server and adds support for Time Machine backups.
