Native iPhone app returns to review

Having yet to receive Apple's approval for a native app, media streaming service PlayOn is tomorrow launching a dedicated iPhone web app. Via HTML5, people will be able to stream content from Hulu, Netflix, Comedy Central and other services. Some restrictions exist; the PlayOn streaming client works only on Windows, for example, and can only broadcast over a local network. The iPad is not yet supported.

Subscribing to PlayOn typically costs $40 for the first year and $20 every year afterward. Alternately, people can pay a one-time fee of $80. Either option also lets people stream to the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, along with computers and DLNA-compatible devices.

The company notes that while a native iPhone app was originally scheduled to launch on July 15th, Apple suddenly put it back into review. "Other similar iPhone apps have been approved for the marketplace and can currently be downloaded, including SlingPlayer Mobile and iDisplay, so we’re confident that we can work through this issue with Apple and hope to be able to launch the application on the App Store soon," an official statement reads.
