Accessory mockup hints at new iPod touch design

May carry camera, flash, rounded back

A mockup image said to come from a case manufacturer hints at the dimensions -- if not necessarily all the features -- of the next iPod touch, according to MacBidouille. The only immediately noticeable difference is the presence of a camera and flash on the back, supporting long-standing rumors that the device will gain closer parity with the iPhone. Yet to be settled is whether the camera will be rated at 5 megapixels, as with the iPhone 4, or a diminished 3.2 megapixels.

The overall shape of the mockup's back is still rounded, essentially unchanged from earlier Touches. If accurate, it suggests that the back will continue to use metal, rather than the flat, reinforced glass used on the iPhone 4. The mockup also depicts anodized aluminum as on the iPad, but since the image is simply meant to convey dimensions, any materials could be pure speculation.

The source for the mockup is described as "ultra trustworthy," as she helped leak the existence of a camera in the most recent iPod nano. The current, third-generation Touch was also initially expected to get a camera, but may have had the component pulled last year due to production problems. A fourth-generation device may gain several upgrades simultaneously, including an A4 processor.

    You do not

use the word "she" when referring to an anonymous source. Most leaks come from guys, so when you say "she" you drastically narrow it down to someone.

    A camera not enough

This move is too late. A good camera should have gone into the 2-g iPod touch. Now the touch needs a GPS/compass to be worth an upgrade. A second-hand iPhone 3G or 3GS without a pricey cellular contract makes more sense.

It's weird how Apple is often the first to add something new to its computers (i.e. USB, a camera, and built-in WiFi/Bluetooth), but often the last to do so in its mobile devices. It's like they're two different companies.

Blutetooth on my three-year-old MacBook and iMac have, from the start, been able to do things Bluetooth on my still-sold-by-Apple iPod touch won't do, things that aren't really that useful with them. Why would I want, for instance, would I want to copy files via Bluetooth with they're already connected via Gigabit Ethernet?

And I'd much rather have a camera on a device I carry with me all the time (an iPod touch) than on two that are typically in contexts where I already have a camera (home/office) or don't need one (working at a coffee shop or library). Why supply something that isn't needed but not something that is? That makes no sense.

The lack of GPS on at least the high-end models of an iPod touch is particularly outdated. Three years ago, iPhone GPS applications needed an always-live cellular connection to grab mapping data. Buying and storing all that data on a mobile device was too expensive. But I now have a Navigon turn-by GPS application on my touch bought on sale for less than $20 that knows every street, gas station, and ATM west of the Rockies. It doesn't need cellular, so it doesn't need to be on an iPhone.

This means that a $20 Broadcomm GPS chip could turn an iPod touch (or an WiFi only iPad) into the equivalent of a $300 GPS. Any other company would jump at the chance to add $300 in value for $20. But I see no evidence that Apple realizes this.

Apple's success, I suspect, depends almost exclusively on Jobs' Reality Distortion Field. When he's gone, they'll be in big, big trouble.

One (more) thing at a time.

Remember, apple focuses on one big update at a time in iOS land.

Better them take a while (iPhone 4 was 18 months) vs slap something together last minute a-la msft.

FM tuner, camera, cool, why don't they also put on a front facing camera.....? I can only guess it's because the iTouch internally is still based on the 3GS.... probably to save money. Imagine the money for glass & steel iTouch production!

As far as compass & GPS, dunno.

    Oooohhh

Well, if a case manufacturer is mocking up new iPod cases, it must mean they know what's coming! It couldn't be that they're basing these on the rumors of what the iPod will contain. They'd never do that! (Especially since that's what they did last year and got it all wrong).

No, they don't. Otherwise, there'd be a long delay for the iPhone 4 as Apple worked the iPad.

iPhone 4 was 12 months, just like the 3 and the 2 and the 1. The only difference is when it was shown. But the development cycles were all the same (as even the ones showed in January didn't go to the FCC until March/April).

Since when does money matter? The biggest s**** up with the touch would be not including a front-facing camera. Having FaceTime on a lot more available devices can only help Apple. Leaving it off is just the usual "We want to 'upsell' people to iPhones if possible!" c*** they pull.

You don't need to go to the iPhone's form factor and look to move to the internals of the 4. Apple would probably want to keep the iPod cheaper on the casing, since it's only a $200 device, not a $600 one like the iPhone.
