Used as reward for some developers
Apple has made a subtle but important change to iAd, allowing for in-ad app downloads, accounts say. The ads are delivered in a special format, resembling the layout of an App Store page. From there people can download an app directly, without having to leave the host app or launch the separate App Store interface. A pop-up dialog box should ask people to confirm a download.
The option is reportedly an incentive for developers in some cases, in that companies can turn any money or credit they earn through iAd into promoting their own apps. It may be necessary for Apple too, as the company is allegedly seeing low fill rates for iAd spots. Costs for placements may potentially be expensive, as much as $1 million.
