Apple surprises with early Sept iPod, iTV event

Apple today up-ended expectations and said it would hold a special music event on September 1. The invitation provides few details but has the photo of a guitar with the Apple logo as a cut-out, signalling that Apple will once again focus primarily on music. It comes about six days ahead of a rumored September 7 date.

The only known detail for the event is a fourth-generation iPod touch, which should have a 960x640 Retina Display along with a front camera for FaceTime and possibly a back camera as well. A revamp of the Apple TV known as the iTV, with iOS, streaming videos and apps, is also rumored to be part of the plan.

Other candidates could include a new iPod nano, which has always had an update each year since it was introduced, and a replacement for the iPod shuffle that might use a miniature touchscreen.

    Time to upgrade my Touch

When I bought my Touch, I was under the impression that the only difference between models was the storage capacity. Well, it was pretty clear to me that my 8gb Touch was actually only a 2nd gen model after iOS 4 came out (even though it was "new")... since none of the features were supported. Gonna toss this piece of c*** and get the new one. Maybe then my games won't stutter every 5 seconds.

    Re: Time...

You should have read up a little bit. Apple has been dumping last year's models as the 'cheap' option for a couple of years (just like the cheapest iPhone is last years model without all the features like front-camera and stuff).

And you're doing exactly what Apple wants you to do. Dump your old model and now buy the new and improved new model. Why? Because they haven't gotten iOS 4 to work like they said it would.

And rather than get angry or get stubborn, you roll over and pay them more cash...

Perhaps a new iLife as well...

...with a focus on a redesigned GarageBand?

I dunno. I'm playing "analyst" today and trying to manipulate the stock price. :P

    Revamped iTunes

I'm betting the acoustic guitar is a metaphor for unplugged meaning you don't have to be plugged into iTunes for syncing and possibly streaming over the cloud. The last announcement time everyone was hyped up about Apple announcing their iTunes cloud service, maybe this could be it this time :)

Perhaps the iTV would take advantage of it first to couple it with iTunes and the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch would take advantage of it with the 4.1 update.

I guess it's a given that there will be new hardware but I'd really like to see a new version of Garageband/iLife

I mean, one that you can enter lyrics and the thing will sing them (even autotune?) them would be interesting.

I'd buy an iTv too if it comes out and is the reinvented media player thing like this one:
