Sept. 1st event could include overhauled Nano, old Touch

New, old Touches would coexist

As with last year, new and old versions of the iPod touch may coexist following a September product announcement, according to Kaufman analyst Shaw Wu. Sources are said to indicate two main models being in production: the first is the expected major update, with iPhone 4 features such as a Retina Display, video recording and FaceTime video calls. The other is described as an "entry-level" player, little changed from present third-generation Touches, likely selling for $199.

Wu's sources also point to a "significant redesign" of the iPod nano, which gained several features in 2009, most notably a video camera and an FM tuner. Apple has allegedly been procuring components for a smaller Nano, which would also take the radical step of eliminating the clickwheel. "We [Kaufman] frankly are not sure if this model will see the light of day," Wu comments. "But this would be a big departure from the design it has had since 2005 when it replaced the iPod mini. From our take, a radical refresh may make sense to jumpstart what was once its [Apple's] top-selling iPod."

The analyst also speculates that Apple will not use the September event to reveal an updated Apple TV, rumored to be called the iTV. "Because of the timing and the image on the invite, we would be surprised if a new Apple TV is announced at this event," he says, adding though that Apple is "known to surprise." The device is still expected to launch during the holiday season or in the first half of 2011.

    Nano Redesign

I hope they don't get rid of the click wheel. I HATE the iPod interface on the Touch and iPhone. If you are at the gym, mowing the lawn or driving the car, etc. It is infinitely easier to make adjustments by feel with the click wheel than having to use a touch screen which requires you to be looking at the screen.

    click wheel

Even forget trying to relocate by feel. It's impossible to just simply move yourself back a couple of minutes in a podcast or forward in a video. You touch the scrubber bar, try to put it in the right place, and the task of just removing your finger invariable moves it on you, making you have to go back and try again.

    love to see

    A feature-matched-across-the-line iTouch at 8GB.

Must be tiring for sales associates to say it's an iPod Touch *BUT*...

    Good news but...

Let's hope this good news is only the beginning. Apple's market share in mobile devices is well past the point where they need a more diverse collection of products to make their customers happy. Having a low-end, mostly music listening version of the iPod touch and a high-end, more video & photos-oriented version is a good start.

But it's only a start. There needs to be a model targeting on-the-go productivity for those who want iPhone capabilities without the phone, a ruggedized model for the sports minded, one for travelers and even a peanut-butter-and-jam-proof model for kids.

And no, this wouldn't make life impossible for developers. They already have to deal with an iPhone v. iPod touch feature gap that changes each year. This would mean looking directly for features (such as GPS or a camera) rather than simply at models/generations.

So you argue that they don't need a diverse collection, then say they need to make a bunch of different versions? Or are you trying to say they are at the point where they need a more diverse collection?

But it's only a start. There needs to be a model targeting on-the-go productivity for those who want iPhone capabilities without the phone, a ruggedized model for the sports minded, one for travelers and even a peanut-butter-and-jam-proof model for kids.

Sorry, never happen. Apple doesn't believe in the '600 models, one just right for you' theory. They believe in the '3 models, make due with one' theory (as they have with everything).

Plus, all those different cases and capabilities? That costs money, and we know Apple is squeaking by. h***, why do you think there's no CDMA iPhone. The cost of having two types of phones would be astronomical. Just imagine 50 different iPods!

And no, this wouldn't make life impossible for developers. They already have to deal with an iPhone v. iPod touch feature gap that changes each year.

No, it is impossible. Look at the grand world of Android and the complete fragmentation of that market. Nobody knows what will work on anything, and it's only getting worse with Tablets! Everyone agrees it's a major problem! I've read it here on MacNN, so it must be true.

And if Apple were to come out with all these different models, the fragmentation would be just as bad, and it would give those android-fanboys ammunition to claim Apple doesn't have a clue!
