Plex/Nine due at midnight Eastern time

New versions of the Plex media player are en route for Mac and iOS devices, the developers have revealed. The updated Mac app is being dubbed Plex/Nine, and should be launched at midnight Eastern time. The major addition is a separate Media Manager for Snow Leopard, which should make it easier to populate Plex with content. It scans selected folders, and automatically assigns names, art and metadata to files using online databases.

The Plex iOS app is expected to become available sometime this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday. It will serve a dual purpose, acting either as a remote for Plex/Nine, or as a way of accessing media on an iPhone, iPod or iPad. The iPad version will be distinct in supporting two-fingered remote gestures.

Can't wait to see the update!

This should really make Plex the premier app for managing media on a Mac!

The Plex/Nine and the Media Manager is available for both Leopard and Snow Leopard. Also, the gesture support is available on all devices not just the iPad.

    Does the app require specialized

types of video files to stream. Can standard DivX and XviD files be used or does it require Apple's X264 format?

    re: Does the app

It would require 264 format, for that's all Apple supports on the iOS.

AirVideo is a good server for video to the iPhone/iPod. It'll auto-convert movies (not sure if Plex will, probably does), but, more importantly, can stream over the internet.

Don't use Plex myself, but it's originator, XBMC, for my tv viewing. Never could get Plex to work right on my mini.
