Apple lets iTunes store lapse a day for updates

Apple today gave a clue that iTunes updates were in development as it skipped its usual Tuesday refresh of the iTunes Store. While new content has been added, the displays and highlighted sections are the same as for last week. The company has previously left the store unchanged for a day if it expected a significant change to the features or layout with a music event on a Wednesday.

Among the possible changes could include ones as simple as 60-second audio samples, although deeper modifications are expected. They may include web-based store browsing and overall deeper discovery features. Also possible are the often rumored 99-cent TV show rentals that would be critical to an overhauled Apple TV hub, although negotiations for these were tight enough that it might only have a limited release or could miss tomorrow's event entirely.

Regardless of changes, a new version of iTunes, possibly 9.5 or 10, is expected to launch on Wednesday along with new iPods.
