iOS 4.1 gets release date through Apple UK
Apple's British site has revealed that iOS 4.1 is likely to be posted on September 8. Where the US site only lists the refresh as "coming soon," the UK page has an exact date. The reason for the discrepancy isn't clear, though it's suspected that the new iPod touch will be available at the same time.
The iOS 4.1 update brings visible upgrades like HDR photography support, Game Center, HD video uploads and TV show rentals, but it should also address a number of well-known issues with the original 4.0 release. iPhone 3G users will get a major performance boost that eliminates the excessive slowdown, while iPhone 4 owners should see corrections to the overly sensitive proximity sensor. Bluetooth should be both refined and add AVRCP support to allow direct control of audio over the wireless link.
Only iPhones and iPods will initially get the update. iPads will have to wait until the iOS 4.2 update in November to get both 4.1 and earlier 4.0 features.

Also, iOS 4.1 will change the Facetime registration system, because iPod touches don't have phone numbers so a new method of reaching people is now needed.
