ZumoCast media streaming app now available

ZumoCast, an app that lets iPhone and iPad users stream media stored on their home computers, has exited private beta testing and can now be downloaded for free. A desktop version also needs to be downloaded and allows users to specify which folders to share. To save space, files are transcoded before being sent out.

The system needs a host computer to be turned on and connected for full streaming, but a local media cache feature lets videos play offline. Copy protected files are not recognized by the software, but the streaming bitrate is automatically adjusted depending on the quality of the Internet connection on the mobile device.

Supported formats go beyond Apple's and include AVI, MKV containers, DivX and RM, among others. iTunes playlists are likewise supported if they use unprotected files.
