Parallels rolls out iOS app to complement Desktop 6

Supports iPad, iPhone, iPod touch

In tandem with today's launch of Desktop 6 for Mac, Parellels has released an updated Parallels Mobile app. Compatible with the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, the title lets users tap into Windows programs running on a remote Mac equipped with Desktop 6. Wi-Fi and 3G connections are supported, and users can start, stop and reset virtual machines.

As necessary, a machine can be optimized for speed or graphics quality. The app has several limitations however; it is only compatible with Desktop 6 for example, and Windows 7's Aero effect does not work. Sound is completely absent from running apps, and games, video and 3D may run slowly. In extreme cases, some software may not display any image. The app is a free download.

Test results with P6 under WIn7

Here are my results running Performance Test 7 in Windows 7 Home Edition 64b. These figures represent how Parallels scored using my Boot Camp partition for Windows 7 versus Boot Camp being booted natively. Parallels is running fullscreen and isolated from OSX.

    Macbook Pro 2010 (i7 2.66, 4GB, nvidia330(m))

    CPU: 20% slower
    Memory: 30% slower
    2D Graphics: 20% *faster*
    3D Graphics: 30% slower
    Harddrive: 572% slower.

Overall that is mighty impressive sans the harddrive performance. I'm not sure what is going on there but that is pretty terrible. Ideas? I have 8GB arriving this week. I will run the tests again when it's installed.

    Parallels Mobile not working

Two features enticed me into purchasing Parallels 6:
    -Speed improvements
    - Parallels Mobile

Unfortunately, while the iOS devices I tried (iPhone4 and iPad) can "see" my macintosh, the program cannot see any virtual machines present ("No virtual machines found").

This error is well documented with a faq to follow to correct. However, after following the manual, the faq, and 3 support calls Parallels Mobile is still not seeing my virtual machines.

Disappointing. Mostly because the support staff is pretty robotic and doesn't even seem to acknowledge that something is wrong.

Other folks are seeing issues with running Coherence when using multiple displays. I have NOT had that issue.

    Re: Test results

Most likely the issues are with the slow implementation of the NTFS drivers for the Mac, which are needed to read/write to the boot camp partition.

Supposedly VMs work a lot faster when using a Virtual HD and not a 'real' hard drive. Can you test the speed with a non-bootcamp system?
