Dock aims to rival Bose SoundDock

Audyssey Laboratories has unveiled a high-end iPhone/iPod dock that aims to compete with the Bose SoundDock and other premium alternatives. The device allows users to wirelessly connect a variety of devices via Bluetooth, while a USB port connects to a computer for iPhone/iPod sync passthrough while the device is still docked.

Most consumers may not recognize the company, as the Audio Dock is its first self-branded product. Audyssey has been established in the audio industry for a number of years, however, as a patent holder of audio technology licensed by companies such as Denon, Creston, Marantz, Onkyo, Phase Technology and Wisdon.

Electronista listened to the Audio Dock in action and talked with several Audyssey representatives regarding the new product. The company has worked to push the limit of two four-inch woofers, a speaker size that typically produces mediocre sound levels and distortion at higher volumes.

Although the iPod dock category has become somewhat saturated on the low end, we were impressed by the Audio Dock's sound reproduction. The bass was surprisingly deep and accurate, retaining a great balance with midrange and low frequencies preserved even in a cacophonous environment.

iPhone owners can take advantage of speakerphone calls while the handset is docked. The company claims users can freely walk around the room while continuing a conversation, as voice-processing algorithms and echo cancellation technology help to maintain sound quality.

The Audio Dock should be available soon, with pricing set at $400.
