AutoCAD comes to iPhone, iPod, iPad

Autodesk has launched AutoCAD WS, an iOS version of the company's desktop CAD software. The app lets users view, share and edit DWG files. External references, layers, and image underlays are incorporated, and while editing users can move, rotate and scale objects. Special tools allow for shape creation, text annotations and distance measurement.

Open DWG files are uploaded to a free AutoCAD WS online workspace. This allows several people to work on the same file simultaneously, and any changes are automatically synced between users. The app operates on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, though the iPad benefits from a larger working area as well as pop-up windows and menus. The download is free.

    Anything...

    Id love an FBX, DXF, MB/MA, OBJ viewer.
    Something that would let me rotate an object around would be nice.

    The point is?

    They cannot be serious. What do they expect to accomplish with CAD on an iPhone? You cannot even read comfortably on it...

    It sure looks AutoCAD ugly! Black background in 2010? Are they serious?

    I'll be curious to see how it handles exported Vectorworks files.

    I told my rep at Nemetschek 2 years ago that they should develop an iPhone, then rumored iPad, version of Vectorworks.

    I just ordered my Vectorworks 2011 upgrade and they say that NOW they're working on an iOS version, but with no specific release date.

    Tried it. Hate it.

    I exported some Vectorworks drawings and was able to open them on my iPad with little trouble. It's a little convoluted, but not much more than importing iWork documents in iTunes.

    Short list of FAIL:

    It requires an internet connection.
    You must set up an account with AutoDesk.

    There are only 2 color modes for viewing documents: black background and black and white. It strips color information from imported documents. It STILL clings to the 1970's black background metaphor.

    Drawing and Editing are plain dreadful.

    It does not support object fills, either colors or patterns, hatches, yes.

    If THIS is the kind of effort AutoDesk is putting in for an iOS app, then I have little doubt that the upcoming Mac version will be a failure.
